Organic farmers often find it difficult to purchase sufficient organic protein feed. The situation will become even more difficult after 1 January 2012, when organic farmers will no longer be permitted to use non-organic products to cover part of their protein consumption.

Fully fermented feed made from seaweed, for example, can be used in organic farming to replace expensive alternative sources of protein. Experiments involving chickens and turkeys have demonstrated that it is possible to feed with fermented protein without any problems.
