Experience

Here is a selection of feedback from Danish farmers regarding their experience with the use of fermented rapeseed/soya:

Dennis Rosenberg

Concerning fermented rapeseed from 7 kg: “Better enteric health and more uniform pigs. Have stopped all medication after the first week. Have replaced fishmeal with fermented rapeseed with no change in growth and FCR. The ration has been optimised with higher protein digestibility.”

Johannes Breinholt

Concerning fermented rapeseed from 7 kg: “Health has improved – uniform pigs and lower mortality rates. Have stopped using medication.”

Concerning fermented rapeseed and soya from 7 kg: “It looks like fermented rapeseed and soya have an even better effect on health than fermented rapeseed alone. We would like a little more time to reach a final conclusion.”

Jens Axel Sørensen

2,000 piglets weaned every week. Concerning fermented rapeseed from 7 kg: “Much better enteric health. Previously, had to remove 100 piglets a week for treatment. Now it is only necessary to remove 5 pigs a week for treatment. Feeding with liquid feed, and some ferments in advance.”

Peter Kjær Knudsen (member of the Board of Directors of the Danish Pig Research Centre)

Fermented rapeseed added from 10 kg. “Diarrhoea has been eliminated, and enteric health has improved. Would like to see a little more, have only been going for a short period. Have replaced soya with rapeseed.”

Agreed on optimising and adding fermented rapeseed from the age of 20 days in the farrowing pens.

Jacob Vallø

Adds approx. 4-5% fermented rapeseed for 10 kg pigs. Jacob has noted that diarrhoea does not appear until the later feed change. Jacob plans to re-optimise and add 10–12% for the pigs.

HS Danvit

Has a customer that has received fermented rapeseed. The customer has very high production figures of approx. 550 g growth. The pigs have grown approx. 30 g less with fermented rapeseed. However, flavourings have not been added to the feed for the piglets. According to what Johannes Breinholt and Dennis Rosenberg have reported, this is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT – otherwise we are likely to see a 30 g drop in growth, as in this case.

Mollerup Mølle

Has five producers that have received fermented rapeseed mixed in over a period of approx. 2 months. Of these, four have seen a positive reaction as regards enteric health and a drop in the mortality rate.

Poul Jensen

Completely ferments feed for all his piglets as from insertion. Replaced all soya and has not seen any difference. Herd was healthy to start with.

Hornsyld Købmandsgård

Added to pelleted feed from 10 kg. After three weeks, the farmer says that the pigs are cleaner and rounder. Over the next weeks, he checks the mortality figures (normally start around this time). We sent a sample to Foulom to check how many bacteria have survived.
